DICOM files contain patient demographics, data about the image, and information about the modality used for capturing the image. Another important aspect of DICOM is its interoperability. ĭICOM is the global standard for transmitting, printing, storing, retrieving, printing, processing, and displaying medical images. DICOM has been globally accepted by the medical imaging industry, and this is another factor that has catalyzed the uptake of telemedicine by radiologists. The American College of Radiology and National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has formulated a standard called Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) to enable the exchange of medical images in a multiple-manufacturer environment. Researchers posited that radiologists have been quick to adopt telemedicine primarily because radiology is a technology-intense domain. Almost all medical specialties have begun adopting telemedicine, and radiology is among the initial adopters. Adoption of telemedicine has enabled new business models, and evaluation frameworks have also been put into use by health economists and practitioners. It is being encouragingly used in both public and private health sectors as a parallel stream for delivering healthcare services. Telemedicine has begun making impacts in both developed and developing countries. This study can serve as a one-stop source for researchers looking for a suitable DICOM viewer for their healthcare IT applications. In total, 13 free, open-source, and web-based DICOM viewers were identified for evaluation however, only six were shortlisted as assessed. eSanjeevani is being prepared for a national roll-out at 155,000 health and wellness centers across rural India by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Government of India) under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme (the world’s largest health insurance scheme). To introduce teleradiology module in eSanjeevani, a study is carried out to enable viewing of radiological images through DICOM viewer. This research assessed a range of web-based, open-source, and freely available DICOM viewers from the perspective of their integration with the Indian National Telemedicine Solution (eSanjeevani). To find an optimal DICOM viewer for integration with a web-based telemedicine solution is quite a challenge, and no research has gone into assessing these freely available DICOM viewers. These freely available tools have rich functionality like the commercial ones. There are myriad web-based DICOM viewers which are open source and are available free of cost as stand-alone applications. Owing to increased demand, adoption, and prospects of browser-based software in the recent past, web-based DICOM viewers have gained significant ground. The Digital Image and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) viewer is a very useful component in telemedicine applications.
